Study Finds Indians Spend Average 4.2 Hours Per Day Explaining To Parents What They Do For A Living
A landmark study by the Indian Council of Social Science Research found that working-age Indians spend an average of 4.2 hours daily explaining their profession to parents, extended family, and neighbours at weddings. The study, conducted across 14 cities and 2,200 respondents, found that the explanation time is highest among software engineers (6.1 hours, owing to the word 'software'), content creators (7.4 hours), UX designers (11.2 hours, with the explanation frequently culminating in the parent saying 'but is it a government job?'), and startup founders (ongoing, unresolved). Total productivity loss to the Indian economy from this activity is estimated at Rs 6.7 lakh crore annually. Parents, when surveyed separately, confirmed they still do not understand but feel the child 'should have done MBBS.'
